Meat Is Murder may have been a holding pattern, but The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths’ great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights. Opening with the storming title track, The Queen Is Dead is a harder-rocking record than anything the Smiths had attempted before, but that’s only on a relative scale — although the backbeat is more pronounced, the group certainly doesn’t rock in a conventional sense. Instead, Johnny Marr has created a dense web of guitars, alternating from the minor-key rush of “Bigmouth Strikes Again” and the faux rockabilly of “Vicar in a Tutu” to the bouncy acoustic pop of “Cemetry Gates” and “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side,” as well as the lovely melancholy of “I Know It’s Over” and “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” And the rich musical bed provides Morrissey with the support for his finest set of lyrics.

In their eight-year existence, Jawbox released four studio albums of increasingly skillful post-punk, not necessarily carrying the torch of their Washington, D.C., elders (Minor Threat, Embrace, Rites of Spring), but instead building on the tradition of Chicago’s thriving early-’80s scene (Big Black, Naked Raygun, Effigies). Highly and unfairly scrutinized for being the first act to leave über-indie Dischord Records, Jawbox proved cynics wrong by releasing two excellent LPs for Atlantic that easily surpassed their Dischord output, all the while retaining their integrity and creative control.

Off their debut album, Throwing Muses (1986)

Some of the most underrated musicians around, the Throwing Muses were the product of step sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donnelly. In 1986, the group’s debut album was put out by the prestigious British label 4AD; Throwing Muses was the first American band to be released on that label. Throwing Muses’ angular, anguished, dark-pop sound had much to do with Hersh’s mental illness. Her unique and raw vocals/rthymm guitar coupled with her sisters lead guitar created a staple of how two guitar indie rock should sound in the 80’s. David Narcizo is a monster drummer who is able to play minimalist better than anyone.
